Study in India

Why Study in India?

India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and one of the most populous. You'll find unparalleled diversity there, from bustling cities to tranquil beaches, upscale hotels to dusty bazaars, and ancient temples to the legacies of colonial Britain. Twenty-two officially recognized languages are spoken, along with hundreds of others. India's ethnic diversity makes it a fascinating place to experience a mixture of cultures, all under one metaphorical roof.

Over the past few years, there has been a sharp increase in the number of foreign students studying abroad in India. Thanks to its rising status in the global economy, as well as its fascinating history, the country is a rich source for studies in business, economics, and linguistics, as well as cultural and development studies. There are hundreds of universities throughout the country offering a range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional-level programs, so check with your school for information about specific exchange programs and how to transfer credits.

India offers an exciting pace of life in its lively urban centers, where many of its universities and colleges are located. Additionally, English is widely spoken. Prepare yourself for sensory overload—Mumbai, India's largest city, has a population density that is more than twice that of New York City. This can be exhausting or enthralling, depending on who you are.

Higher Education in India

With a population of almost 1.2 billion people, India is the second most populous country in the world. Thirty percent of the population lives in urban centers, such as Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi, the capital, which has a population equal to the entire country of Australia. An incredibly diverse country, India has 15 national languages and myriad religions and ethnic groups. By 2025, the number

of 15-24 year olds is expected to rise to 100 million—twice the number of young adults in North America and 25 percent more than in all of Europe. In addition to a large and growing population, India also has the third largest higher education system in the world, behind China and the U.S., in terms of number of students enrolled. The highly centralized system consists of over 400 institutions established and recognized by the Indian government, including 20 central universities, 215 state universities, 100 deemed universities and 13 institutions of national importance, which include the world-renowned Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Created to train and develop a skilled workforce of scientists, engineers and business leaders, IITs and IIMs attract the country’s most talented and ambitious students, and admission is extremely competitive. In addition, there are over 21,000 other colleges.

Study Options

In a study abroad program in India, you can choose to concentrate on any of the country's strong areas, viz:

  • Medicine
  • Nuclear energy
  • Astronomy
  • Biotechnology
  • Oceanography
  • Engineering
  • Management

In addition, Indians have a high regard for animals and trees-the Hindus even worship them- and consequently, environmental students will want to check out:

  • Wildlife such as elephants, camels, leopards, lions, rhinos and the national  animal, the Bengal tiger
  • The majestic Himalayan Mountains in the north, including Mt. Everest (climb it if you dare!) and the unique surrounding plant and animal life
  • Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary in Bihar and Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand

A study abroad program in India will also expose you to a fascinating culture, ancient architecture and the amazing history of a country that has been growing and evolving on its own, because it hasn't invaded another country in the past 10,000 years. Plus, watch the very idea of color come alive as more vibrant tones than you ever imagined jump out at you from every shirt, building and flower.
